The Best Shows on Netflix

Sense 8

From the creators of  The Matrix comes this tense series in which eight people can telepathically experience each other’s lives.

I was honestly blown away by this series. It’s like nothing else. It goes all out, in every way, delivering beautiful scenes done by beautiful characters. It’s weird and wonderful, and I cannot wait for the next season (which should release soon!)

Pretty Little Liars

A group of friends (the gorgeous Lucy Hale, Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson & Shay Mitchell) wake up to find one of their friends missing and, later, dead. After her murder and disappearance, the group is contacted by a mysterious figure who claims to be their deceased friend.

This show is my guilty pleasure. It may have started out being aimed at preteens, but the murders, kidnappings, love stories, cliffhangers and fact that I’m the same age as these actresses mean that I will continue watching until the end (which is coming this spring!).

After their plane crashes on a deserted island, a diverse group of people must adapt to their new home and contend with the island’s enigmatic forces.

If you know me, you know I’m obsessed with this show. The description doesn’t do it justice. My family and I started watching it as soon as it aired on ABC (on Wednesday night’s, after church, with burgers from the Woodson Inn), and then my husband and I followed it through college, even watching the series finale at the Alamo Drafthouse. I can’t say enough about this show, so I won’t say any more!

Gossip Girl

The series is narrated by the omniscient blogger “Gossip Girl” and is voiced by Kristen Bell. The plot revolves around the lives of privileged teens living on the Upper East Side of New York, and they can hide no secret from the ruthless blogger who’s always watching. Rounding out the main cast in the series are Blake Lively (as Serena van der Woodsen), Leighton Meester (as Blair Waldorf), Penn Badgley (as Dan Humphrey), Chace Crawford (as Nate Archibald), Ed Westwick (as Chuck Bass), Kelly Rutherford (as Lily van der Woodsen) and Matthew Settle (as Rufus Humphrey).

I’m not traditional, in any sense, so I didn’t watch Gossip Girl when it was cool to watch it; I watched it, like, last year – which was perfect, since my family took a Christmas trip to NYC, so I got to walk where Chuck and Blair got married, only a couple of days after watching it.

Stranger Things

A lost boy. A government lab steeped in terrible secrets. A mother who won’t rest until her son is found. The great Winona Ryder. The lovable Millie Bobby Brown. And Natalia Dyer and Finn Wolfhard as the Wheeler children.

This was an instant hit, and most people (Me!) finished the eight episodes in one day, being drawn in by the unique story and 80’s vibe.

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia

Narcissistic friends Charlie, Mac, Dennis and Dennis’s sister, Dee, run Paddy’s Pub, a downtown Philadelphia Irish bar, where everyone’s judgmental (and juvenile) behavior usually brings situations from uncomfortable to hysterically horrible.

What a great description for a great show. My now-husband and his old roommate got me hooked on this show, and we.are.them. My husband, Tommy, is Mac, obsessed with working out. I’m Dee, born to be a star yet ridiculed, at times, for being so tall and bird-like. Bonus points for the fact that these two are married in real life! My brother (Dennis on the show and Tanner in real life) is a tall, self-proclaimed god-like creature, perfect in every way. And finally, there’s Charlie, the wild card (We’ll give this honor to our friend Robin;). If you like to laugh and are okay with ridiculous/crass situations, I highly recommend Always Sunny (Season 12 coming 1/4/17!).

As a child, I looked up to the pretty, nice girls in high school and my fave actresses on TV, but here are the ones that I actually imitated in real life…

cool room

I’m sure I’ve tried to be like Hilary/Lizzie many times (We ARE both from Texas, and she IS one of the few who hasn’t let Hollywood ruin her.), but you see those lights behind her bed? Yes, I immediately bought some flower ones, to light my room up oh-so perfectly.

While I wasn’t obsessed with this show or anything, I do enjoy reminiscing about Clarissa’s fab outfits. But the thing I stole from her? I, too, transformed my old doll house into an entertainment system, with the perfect cubbies for a TV and VCR.

CaptureNow, this one copied me! My lockers always had the greatest accessories, and while I never would’ve gone so far as to deface school property by painting mine pink (though I MAY have been able to talk the principal into it, right?;), mine were always as great as Sharpay’s.

Currently, I’m realizing that great leaders – the ones to really look up to – are the ones whose words, actions and entire lives you’d be okay with copying. Furthermore, if these people lead by example and don’t even know it – it’s just that apparent that they know what they’re doing and they do it oh-so well – then those are the ones you should definitely be admiring and, yes, even copying a bit, to acquire the best traits possible!

BONUS: Maybe this is the day you’ll get a new spark of inspiration, to strive to be like the people above. Whether you want to update your home accessories or work to live with character that blows others away, I hope you do so happily and purposefully!

True Love & Its Crazy Rules

I know several of my posts are about Real Housewives, but this one is actually deeper. One of my favorite Bravo women – Carole Radziwill – just wrote a new book, The Widow’s Guide to Sex & Dating. Not only is she a coveted RH of NYC, but she’s also a journalist who was married to a Kennedy (see why I love her?).

In honor of her new book, she’s having fans write on some of her dating rules, and this week’s is “don’t sleep with him until he thinks he’s in love with you.”

I know I’m young and may not have that many juicy love stories or deep insight into fate and kismet, but here are my thoughts on this rule…

There’s no logic to these things. You meet someone and you fall in love, and that’s that. This Woody Allen quote sums up the tip-of-the-iceberg when it comes to love. Whether we’re eight, eighteen or fifty eight-years-old, we see The One, fall head over heels and can’t help it all.

My first word was the name of a cute boy my dad coached, and from then on, I remember crushing on boys on the playground and beyond. My “real” moment of this, though, happened on a plane ride to Cologne, Germany, where I set my eyes upon Tommy Baze. I switched seats to be by him the entire ride, bonded over music and small towns, ended up at the University of Texas with him…and the rest is history!

The course of true love never did run smooth. Then, however, bumps and trials come. Our romantic drama may not be as extreme as some of the scenes from Shakespeare, but we lose a little bit of the luster and must decide if this is, indeed, true love.

I was only 16 when I met Tommy, and the first years of college can be confusing, wild and life-changing, so we definitely hit some snags.

So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s gonna be really hard. We’re gonna have to work at this everyday, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, you and me, every dayWe’ve all been swept away by Ryan Gosling quoting this, and if/when you reach this point in a relationship, you know it’s real and that you can work through tough times and choose each other forever.

After many tears and thoughts and even joining dating sites to get over each other, we eventually became “official,” choosing to be together, for reals and for good.

I was made and meant to look for you and wait for you and become yours forever. And then we feel complete, knowing that this is why we exist, to live and love, just as Robert Browning spoke about long ago.

Now, we’re a few years into our relationship, and I know we’ll face even more challenges and crossroads, but we only have this one short life, and I’m thrilled to be spending mine with a cutie I met on a Lufthansa flight.

So when it comes to not sleeping with (or being with or kissing) a guy until he’s in love with you…I say go with your gut! Because as my first point mentions, we seriously cannot help it when we fall for someone, and no matter how great everything seems, we are going to have to have lessons learned. So get out there, and while being smart and safe, test the waters, go on adventures and see if/how you can meet your Prince Charming (or Noah Calhoun;).

As always, thanks for reading, and be sure to keep us with all the news surrounding #WidowsGuide.
